ALMONT — Village officials hope an ounce of prevention in the future will help avoid more problems with the water fountain at the Pocket Park downtown.

The fountain had been a source of problems in the past, but they were usually limited to youngsters adding detergent to create bubbles.

Village Manager Gerald Oakes said the most recent problem could have been easily avoided, sparing the village nearly $8,000 in repairs.

Oakes said DPW workers failed to winterize the fountain last winter, resulting in the freezing and cracking of several underground pipes.

"It was a failure of the DPW to not drain it properly last year," said Oakes. "The pipes froze over the winter and all the plastic tees and elbows cracked. There were about six leaks.

"The biggest problem was having to break through all that concrete to do the repairs," he continued. "That had to all be done by hand. It was a tedious, difficult job."

Village council members were expected to approve the $7,483 expenditure for repairs at Tuesday's meeting.
