IMLAY CITY — If at first you don't succeed ... and so on and so forth.

After six years of trying, 15-year-old Sadie Wise finally heard her name called at the annual Miss Lapeer competition during the weekend's Lapeer Days festival. And this time, it was for all the marbles.

"It couldn't have been more of a surprise," says the soon-to-be junior at Imlay City High School. "I was shocked because I've been involved in this pageant since I was in the sixth grade."

Pageants have been a way of life for Sadie since she was a little girl. In 2000, she was the second runner-up in the Little Miss Blueberry competition, a title she sought on five occasions.

Competing this year in the age 13-18 category, Sadie was prepared for any outcome. She was nevertheless pleased with the result.

"It was very exciting," says Sadie of her Miss Lapeer selection. "I am very happy and surprised."

A member of Imlay City High School's varsity cheerleading team, she is no stranger to the pressures of performing.

"I like to compete because it's fun and it helps my self-confidence," she says. "I also get to meet a lot of new friends."

With her Miss Lapeer title providing the impetus, Sadie is now preparing for the Miss Teen USA competition which takes place in Port Huron in September.
