IMLAY CITY — The Ultimate Air Dogs jumping competition has quickly become a favorite of visitors at the Woods-N-Water News Outdoor Weekend and this year's event is shaping up to be just as entertaining.
Dozens of dogs and their owners will converge on the Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds Sept. 7-9 to show off their dock jumping skills.
"The majority of our competitors are hunting dogs. Training for our sport keeps our dogs in peak physical condition, so that come fall, they are ready to hit the pond, lake or field," says Milt Wilcox, President of Ultimate Air Dogs and former Detroit Tiger pitcher of 1984 World Series fame.
Local competitors are also welcome to try out their skills too.
On Friday, open jumping will commence at 5 p.m. followed by the first 'splashes' or competitive rounds. First-timers are welcome, Wilcox said, and the first place winners in each division will move on to Saturday's qualifying rounds, ranked by the distance they jump.
All qualifying competitions will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and finals will follow on Sunday before wrapping up with the 'Ultimate' finals at 3 p.m.
There are no requirements for a throw object—tennis ball, rubber chicken, training bumpers—but organizers recommend a very visible object the dogs can spot easily.
All sorts of jumping commands will be on display too.
