Take the 100 mile challenge

There's never been a better time to take the 100 mile challenge and earn the title of 'locovore,' a growing movement across the country that's changing the way people eat for the better. For the next 30 days, why not try to consume foods that were grown, processed or made within a 100 mile radius? As harvest season approaches in our rural communities, this challenge isn't difficult to meet.

And since it's 'Farmers Market Week' in the state of Michigan, why not try it now?

Farmers Market Week was declared by Gov. Jennifer Granholm to raise awareness about farmers markets, to encourage Michigan residents to buy local food and to celebrate the benefits of eating locally.

Farmers markets offer consumers fresh, healthy food options and serve as a link among urban, suburban and rural communities. They contribute to the state's economy and to the overall health of Michigan residents.

With markets in Almont, Dryden, Imlay City and Lapeer—and a variety of u-pick farms around the corner, Tri-City area residents won't have any trouble meeting the 100 mile challenge—and benefit from its healthy effects, too.

We encourage residents to support farmers markets, locally grown food and our agricultural producers who are stewards of the land.

Farmers markets aren't just about produce, either. Meat, eggs, honey, jams, baked goods, flowers, hand-crafted items and more are available at area markets. Local farm stores also offer milk, ice cream, cheese, herbs and seasonal items that make it possible for any cook to put together a locally produced meal.

Become a 'locovore' and support the local economy and our rural community by visiting the area's farmers markets. There's no better time than now to take the 100 mile challenge and change your family's diet for the better.
