Gonzalez, Van Dyk team up for West squad in narrow 65-63 win

June 20, 2007
TRI-CITY AREA — Capac's Amanda Gonzalez and Imlay City's Marcia Van Dyk both saw court time for the West team in their 65-63 win against the East squad last Thursday evening at the Blue Water Area All-Star Basketball Game hosted by Richmond High School.

In Thursday's encounter, the East bolted out to a 17-6 advantage with 5:28 gone.

The West then bounced back with a 13-5 edge over the next 4:32.

That made it 22-19, East, midway through half number one.

The East then countered with a 20-12 run over the next 10-minute stretch.

That left the East holding a 42-31 cushion at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, the momentum shifted over to the West's side.

Thanks to a 21-10 run encompassing a 12:17 span, the East was able to knot the score at 52 points per side.

The final seven minutes-plus would see the lead exchange hands several times.

Then with eight seconds remaining and her team trailiing by a 63-62 count, Sandusky sharpshooter Krystyna Rickett launched an attempt from trifecta territory. Her effort would prove true, giving her team a 65-63 edge at the time.

On the ensuing possession, the East's Stacey Farrell (St. Clair) was fouled on a drive to the basket. She was awarded two shots, enabling her team to pull even should her attempts succeed.

However, Farrell's initial attempt missed the mark and the second did the same.

The West team pulled down the rebound and the clock zeroed out shortly thereafter.

They had prevailed. And oh what a finish it was at that.

Rickett, who was named the game's MVP, topped the West squad with 20 points. She drained four trifectas en route.

The West side had 12 others reach the scoring column. Their ranks consisted of Port Huron Northern's Rachel Meharg (12 points, featuring four treys), Port Huron Northern's Abbey Schlaegel (six), Sandusky's Allison Demott, Port Huron High's Brianne Donaldson, Port Huron High's Norianna Brown and Gonzalez (four each), Memphis' Emily LeTarte and Van Dyk (three apiece), Sandusky's Bobbie May and Memphis' Dana Lang (two each) along with Mayville's Danielle Nelson (one).

Brittany Carnago, of St. Clair, paced the East with 12 points. She was backed by Farrell (10 points), Cardinal Mooney's Amanda Theut and New Haven's Ashlee Williams (seven each), St. Clair's Meg Cedar (five), Deckerville's Marjorie Marchart (four), Peck's Kristan Fletcher and Algonac's Chelsey Kimbrough (three apiece) along with Carsonville's Port Sanilac's Erica Christy (two).

Yale's Brittany Edgerton plus Richmond's Natalie Theut and Ashley Austin also suited up for the East squad but did not score that evening.
