IMLAY CITY — Rodney Warner finds himself occupying a familiar seat on the city commission.

Just minutes after City Clerk Jan Zuhlke swore in newly-elected commissioners Marty Rankin, Brian Hill, Ted Collom and Warner last Tuesday, Warner was elected mayor by his fellow commissioners.

Also nominated for the mayor's post was commissioner Lois Brinker, who drew the favor of fellow commissioner Earl Gass.

Past mayor Marty Rankin was unanimously elected mayor pro-tem.

Being mayor is nothing new to Warner, who has held the post twice before. He said he's more than happy to serve in the same capacity again.

"I like the job," said Warner. "I like talking with and listening to people. I enjoy representing the city and people that I love."

Warner said having a strong city manager and dedicated city commission makes the job of mayor easy.

"It's not an eight-hour job," he said. "I think I do a good job as mayor, and I appreciate the support of my fellow commissioners. I don't want to let them or the city down."

With two previous terms as mayor under his belt, Warner says he's learned a few things about the job.

"It's a responsible position," he said. "I've learned to be more careful about what I say. But I'm always willing to talk to people and hear their concerns."

In addition to ensuring that services are provided citizens during difficult economic times, Warner understands that tough decisions will have to be made in coming years.

"I would like to see the old water and sewer lines fixed and working properly," he said. "This is going to catch up to us some time soon."

"It would be hard to do," he said of the project. "We don't want to tear up the whole town to do it. But this is going to have to be dealt with eventually."

For now, he's content to run city commission meetings and marry an occasional bride and groom at the Blueberry Festival.

"This job is a lot of fun for me," he said.
