IMLAY CITY — City officials hope to make a splash with younger residents with construction of a 80-foot-by-50-foot splash pad next to the Alvin Norlin Memorial swimming pool at Lamb-Steele Park.

The city plans to seek grant money to help pay for the splash pad project, which is estimated to cost in the range of $350,000.

City Manager Tom Youatt said the splash pad will cost about $175,000, not to include the additional costs for water and sewer lines, water pumps, electrical wiring and related work associated with the project.

Youatt said he is seeking matching grant funds through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' (MDNRs) "Recreation Passport Grant" program.

He said the deadline to submit a grant is April 1, 2019.

The objective of the Passport Grant program is to provide funding to local units of government for the development of public recreation facilities; including the development of new facilities and the renovation of old facilities.

Youatt said should DNR choose to award the matching grant funds, the city would be responsible for at least 25% of the project's total cost.

"It's worth the investment in our community," said Youatt. "This recreational asset can be a point of a pride for Imlay City.

"The swimming pool already gets a lot of use, and I think the splash pad will, too."
