LAPEER COUNTY — More than a year remains before voters will select a new state representative but the first candidate has decided to throw her hat in the ring.
Earlier this month, Republican Jan Peabody announced that she will seek the 82nd District House seat being vacated by Kevin Daley at the end of 2014.
The 52 year-old Peabody, who resides in Lapeer and works as a nurse for Genex Services, currently serves as chairwoman of the Lapeer County Republican Party.
"I'm planning on running an organized, positive and vigorous campaign for the next 14 months. I look forward to meeting with and speaking with as many Lapeer County residents as I can on how I can best serve them as their state representative," Peabody said in a statement.
The 82nd District encompasses all of Lapeer County. Daley, also a Republican, has held the seat since 2008 and per the state's term limit law, will vacate it after six years.
The 2014 primary election will be held on August 5. The general election follows on November 4, 2014.
