Almont, Imlay City get one title each in BWAC


Dwyer, Mullins win individual championships, Dempz, Hampton and Harper finish second

TRI-CITY AREA — The Imlay City and Almont wrestling teams pulled up fourth and seventh, respectively, last Saturday at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament.

Cros-Lex High School is where the action unfolded.

When the final scores were posted, Richmond's 209-point total proved tops. They were followed by Algonac (191 points), Cros-Lex (128), Imlay City (91), Yale (84), Armada (61), Almont (59) and North Branch (zero).

Hunter Mullins led Imlay City that day. Mullins reached the championship bout at 160 pounds where he notched a 7-4 win against Cros-Lex foe Paul Scaramuzzino.

Wesley Hampton and Joe Harper gave Imlay City seconds. Hampton gained admittance to the 135-pound title encounter where he dropped a 5-4 verdict to Algonac's Mark Langewicz and Harper made the 285-pound championship bout where he fell by a 7-5 count to Algonac's Mike Nykoriak in a clash that went to overtime before a victor was declared.

Dakota Sandzik and Cristian Rojas added thirds to Imlay City's cause. The former ended his stint at 112 pounds when he pinned Cros-Lex counterpart Jason Bearer with 34 seconds gone and the latter finished his run with an 8-4 victory over Richmond 125-pound counterpart Josh Barton.

Mathew Dwyer headlined for Almont. Dwyer earned a title match appearance at 140 pounds where he obtained an 11-1 win against Richmond's Ryan Griffith.

Gavin Dempz provided Almont with a second. Dempz advanced to the 119-pound championship encounter where he was pinned by Yale's Brendan Connolly with 1:43 elapsed.

Mason Smith and Robbie Battani rounded out the list of Almont placewinners with fourths. Smith closed out his run at 152 pounds when he was pinned by Richmond's Ethan Wyatt with 4:01 gone and and Battani concluded 189-pound action when he was pinned by Algonac's Ryan Osterland with 4:14 elapsed.
