July 12, 2017ALMONT — The Almont Attack 12U softball team saw to it they would have cause to celebrate when all was said and done, bringing home a first-place finish from the ASA USA "B" State Championship Tournament.
It was contested June 29-July 2 in Holland.
The Almont Attack started things off on Thursday, June 29 with an 8-4 win against Line Drive Express. It was there the squad overcame a 4-0 deficit after one inning to prevail.
They then edged NTF Nova, 5-3, in a game that took extra innings to determine a victor.
That left the Almont Attack first at the completion of pool play.
Friday, June 30 would commence double elimination bracket action. It was there the team made Mid Michigan Heat absorb an 11-4 loss and hand Bat Busters 12U a 6-1 setback.
The Almont Attack then picked up an 8-6 quarterfinal victory over Niles Nitro and registered a 5-3 triumph against Mid Michigan Heat on Saturday, July 1.
The following day would see Almont Attack and Mid Michigan Heat meet again, this time with the state title on the line.
When the final scores were added up, the Almont Attack closed out an unbeaten tournament run with a 14-6 victory. The triumphant side pounded out 18 base hits en route to the favorable verdict.
Olivia Malcolm was the winning pitcher in six of the Almont Attack tournament wins.
Andie Trupiano and Erin Seros also performed well for the Almont Attack when their opportunity to pitch rolled around.
Lindsey Wilson (14 hits), Elly Schapman (12 hits and 10 RBI), Devin Johnston (12 RBI), Trupiano (10 hits and 10 RBI), Meghan Winston (nine runs) and Seros (eight hits and seven RBI) put up the Almont Attack's best offensive numbers.
Carley Kalbfleisch. Lindsey McGann, Avery Wolters and Emily Henige joined them on the Almont Attack roster. They were directed to their top finish by coaches Lane Johnston and Ray Johnston.
