At a time when it's not exactly a popular profession—and perhaps even more dangerous than ever— local police officers continue to demonstrate the vast and varied range of duties, responsibilities and expectations required by the job. They also inspire awe and earn major props by going above and beyond to protect and serve—and save. Lives, that is.
The heroic actions of Almont Police Officers Ryan Wilson and Michael Ryan in July of 2016 meant the difference between life and death for one 15-year-old involved in an ATV accident on Hough Road. The young man was severely injured when he struck a reinforced mailbox. He was ejected from the vehicle and landed in a ditch, unable to breathe.
The officers acted quickly to clear his airways, and continued to administer first aid until EMS and Almont First Responders arrived. Without their lifesaving actions, the story would have had a much different ending for the young man and his family.
We admire and respect all of our area police officers, who continue to define the term "community policing." A big salute to Officers Wilson and Ryan for their outstanding actions in a very tense and trying situation.
