Family spreads generosity in wake of devastating fire

Almont's Hibner family urges donations to area fire departments

September 06, 2017
ALMONT TWP. — The Hibner family has received such an outpouring of support since their house was destroyed by a fire in mid-August, that they're now asking that donations be directed to the fire department.

Soon after firefighters extinguished flames at the Hough Rd. residence, families from the Almont School district banded together to collect toys, clothes and other essentials for the family of five-Kristy, Jeremy, and their three kids ages 8, 6 and 4.

Then relative Jamie Calabro created a GoFundMe (www.gofundme.com/hibner-house-fire) account on the family's behalf and within a matter of weeks, the campaign had nearly reached its goal of $5,000.

"There has been an overwhelming amount of support and donations from a lot of people in the community and thankfully their needs have been met in that respect," Calabro said.

"People can still donate through the GoFundMe account but another way to support them would be to donate to the local fire departments so they may continue to help the community."

In all, four fire departments responded to the scene—Almont, Berlin, Dryden and Addison townships. A crew from MedStar EMS also assisted on scene.

According to initial reports from Almont Fire Chief Don Smith, it's believed the fire started in the kitchen and dining room area but the cause was undetermined. No one was home at the time of fire.
