Great friends, great memories

August 29, 2007
Editor's note: The following guest column was submitted by Ron Little, a 1957 graduate of Almont High School. He and his wife Pat recently hosted a 50th class reunion at their home in Rodney, Michigan.

I called the newspaper recently and said I would like to put an article in the paper that serves Almont about the 50th reunion of the class of 1957. My dad, Gene Little owned the Almont Times Herald several years ago and Almont is still special to me.

Since the town has their 'Homecoming' reunion every five years, it did not fall on the 50th anniversary of my class. So I worked at contacting all of the classmates and invited them to our home near Big Rapids for the weekend of Aug.17-19.

Larry Nowaczyk, Ed Miles, Howard Betker, Floyd Wells, Larry Kersten, Marvel Yoder, Tom Hough, Alex Iloncaie, (front) Janet Williams Krauss, Doretta Owen Thompson, Aileen Senyk Bement, Geraldine Spies Kersten, Nancy Scott Bohnet, Ruth Vickland Schaut, Dave King, and Ron Little at recent Almont High School Class of 1957 reunion at Little’s home.

There are 33 classmates left in the group and 16 of them were able to attend. Plus our football coach Jerry Laycock and wife Marion, and Jackie Watt, wife of deceased track coach Arvid Watt also attended.

We began with classmates arriving with campers, and others driving in from Wisconsin and New Mexico, plus one flew in from Massachusetts. Many came from all over Michigan, from the U.P. to Almont and the surrounding area.

We spent a wonderful cool evening on Friday around the campfire sharing things that had happened to us during the last 50 years since graduation, and good food. On Saturday, others arrived and conversation continued, plus a wonderful catered dinner. We had prepared special mementos of a cup and placemat for the evening. We talked until late in the evening.

On Sunday a brunch was prepared and several stayed to continue to share bits of themselves with each other. Late afternoon brought the last "farewell until later, see you in 2010."

It was truly a wonderful weekend as this was the first time our class had been together by themselves as a group.

The class has decided to meet together at the Almont town reunion in 2010 at the home of Tom Hough with a gathering for the weekend in 2012 at our home.
